Charles is a CNRS researcher at Laboratoire de Réactivité et Chimie des Solides (France) since 2007. He received his M. Sc. degree in analytical chemistry and electrochemistry from the University Pierre & Marie Curie (Paris VI, France) in 2002, and completed his PhD in materials chemistry at Laboratoire de Réactivité et de Chimie des Solides (Université de Picardie Jules Verne, Amiens) in 2005. He was then a Postdoctoral fellow for two years within Prof. John Newman’s group at University of California, Berkeley. Charles has authored over 40 peer-reviewed papers and three patents. He was awarded the „Carl Wagner Medal of Excellence in Electrochemical Engineering of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering“(2011), the „Oronzio and Niccolò De Nora Foundation Prize of ISE on Applied Electrochemistry“(2009), the „2007 Umicore Scientific Award“(2007), and the „2005 Research Student Award of the battery division of the Electrochemical Society“(2005).

His current research interest is the development of physics-based mathematical models for studying lithium-ion batteries, with a focus on battery life prediction. He work closely with industry such as automotive and microelectronics on battery modeling projects. He has also served on the proposal review committees for the Helmholtz Institute (Germany), the US-DOE BATT program (Batteries for Advanced Transportation Technologies, USA), the Partnership University Fund (France-USA), and the SBIR program (Small Business Innovation Research, USA).
